The Central Arkansas Tip-Off Classic: A Slam Dunk Success!
Basketball fans, get ready to celebrate! The inaugural Central Arkansas Tip-Off Classic was a resounding triumph, drawing a massive crowd of 3,161 enthusiastic supporters to the Jack Stephens Center on Friday night. This event marked the exciting start of the basketball season, and the energy was palpable.
The exhibition doubleheader featured a thrilling showdown between the Little Rock Trojans and the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, two in-state rivals. The atmosphere was electric, with both schools' dance teams and the Trojan pep band adding to the festive mood. A special tribute to the 2010-11 NCAA Tournament team, led by the legendary Solomon Bozeman (the Trojans' star player that season and now UAPB's head coach), added a nostalgic touch.
A Night of Close Contests
The evening kicked off with the Trojans' women's team securing a nail-biting 52-50 victory. The men's game followed, with the Golden Lions taking the win 77-69. The games were closely contested, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
A Promising Future
Announced in September as a collaborative effort, the Central Arkansas Tip-Off Classic aims to boost college basketball in the region. Based on Friday's atmosphere, it's clear this event is destined to become an annual highlight. The attendance of over 3,000 fans was one of the largest crowds for Little Rock basketball in recent seasons, signaling strong community support.
Key Moments in the Women's Game
Graduate student Jordan Holman was the star of the show, leading all scorers and delivering clutch plays for the Trojans. Her three-pointer with 5:16 remaining gave Little Rock a 48-47 lead, which she extended with a free throw. With just over two minutes left, UAPB closed the gap, but Brenna Burk sealed the victory for the Trojans by chasing down a tipped ball, drawing a foul, and sinking a free throw.
Men's Matchup Highlights
In the men's game, Tuongthach Gatkek led Little Rock with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Cameron Wallace added 14 points, and Khasen Robinson chipped in 11. Despite a strong second-half comeback after trailing by double digits at halftime, the Trojans ultimately fell short.
Looking Ahead
Little Rock's men's team will host Arkansas Tech in an exhibition on Tuesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. The women's team will open their regular season on Monday, November 3, at 7 p.m. against Central Baptist College. The men will tip off their regular season the following night against Arkansas Baptist College.
